My research interests fall into two major categories: (1) harassment and prejudice and (2) organizational commitment.
My efforts in harassment and prejudice research have recently expanded beyond sexual harassment to include other types of harassment. Of particular interest is race and ethnicity. I have been working on a manuscript that explores the way that people of different race-sex combinations perceive and evaluate ethnic and sexual insults and slurs. Also underway is a manuscript that investigates the experiences of bilingual workers. Special emphasis was placed on understanding the prejudice that bilingual workers are subjected to, as well as the mechanisms that exacerbate and attenuate the occurrence of this prejudice. Additionally, I have been working on theoretical and empirical pieces regarding stigmas that are removable (e.g., obesity, membership in a poorly regarded club or occupation) and how the stigmatizing characteristic can continue to mark the person as stigmatized and thus susceptible to prejudice and discrimination even after the characteristic is removed.
My research on organizational commitment incorporates my interests in contingent (i.e., temporary) and non-contingent workers. A study of the stereotypes that people hold about contingent and non-contingent workers is under analysis. Also underway is a series of studies from a recently completed year-long collection of multi-source data that includes working students, the persons they identified as the closest to them, and coworkers. This multi-source data set allows for the study of organizational commitment, its antecedents, and its criterion behaviors that is free of common method bias and ratings effects that plague other organizational commitment studies. Future research in this area includes longitudinal explorations of organizational commitment and theoretical papers on the nature of commitment.
