The overall goal of my research is to improve mental health services for underserved children and adolescents. Specifically, examining predictors of child mental health services use and developing strategies that will eliminate obstacles to appropriate service delivery for underserved youth. By identifying variables that contribute to child mental health service use, future research will be guided toward developing more effective strategies to remove such barriers to service utilization and to better engage parents in treatment for their children. For example, educating parents on the types of services available and emphasizing that individuals who seek mental health services are better off than those who abstain.
Currently, research is being conducted to develop a measure to assess attitudes toward mental health services for children. Preliminary results using a sample of university students indicated that the measure is reliable and valid. Future research will examine the psychometric properties and the utility of the measure using a sample of parents.
