Psychology Department received a group Diversity award from TAMU
Provost's office. Individual Diversity awards received by Antonio
Cepeda-Benito and Jyotsna Vaid.

James Grau was recently elected President of Division 6 (Behavioral
Neuroscience and Comparative Psychology) of the American Psychological
Association.

New Grants Awarded to Faculty: Mary Meagher is co-PI on a 5-year,
$1.5 million grant from the National Institute of Health to study
the role of cholinergic system in age-related memory impairments.
Mark Packard is PI on a 5-year $625,000 grant from the National
Science Foundation to examine neurobiological mechanisms underlying
the link between emotion and memory. Winfred Arthur is PI on a $100,000
grant from the National Science Foundation on complex skill acquisition
and retention.

Ludy Benjamin, Jr., received a Presidential Teaching Award in May
2003, presented by TAMU President Robert Gates and CLA Dean Charles
Johnson.

Gerianne Alexander's research with Melissa Hines on toy preferences
in vervet monkeys was cited in Newsweek's cover article on "Boys,
Girls, and Autism" (Sept. 8, 2003). See Psychology Spotlight
story below.

New Graduate Placements this Fall: Minda Orina, Social doctoral
student, is Assistant Professor in the Dept. of Communication, Michigan
State University. Jamie Rhudy, Clinical doctoral student, is Assistant
Professor in the Dept. of Psychology, University of Tulsa. Bryan Edwards,
IO doctoral student, is Assistant Professor in the Dept. of Psychology,
Tulane University.

Why do boys and girls like different types
of toys? A recent study published by
Dr. Gerianne Alexander, in collaboration with
Dr. Melissa Hines at City University, London,
suggests that biology may play a key role
in sex-typed toy preferences.
