Students planning to complete a PhD in psychology must choose an area of specialization. This area will determine the courses that students complete as part of their training and any additional requirements for internship or practicum training. The focus of all of our doctoral programs is to train the next generation of leaders in science and in applying psychological science to understand and improve human functioning. Many psychologists work in academic institutions, and the field of psychology encompasses both research, through which we learn about human and animal behavior, and practice, through which knowledge is applied in helping to solve problems and promote healthy human development. One of psychology’s most unique and important characteristics is its coupling of science and practice, which stimulates the advancement of both.
